Gods, but i remember those days, and not fondly, either. We reached a point where we'd get just overwhelmed with calls and kinda came up with a way to get rid of them- we found the call queue server IP address and pinged it a million times with 1 MB data packets from how ever many machines we could find around the call centre that were left logged in- kinda a primitive intranet DDoS. Once that machine crashed we had quiet time until one of the bosses called the IS people and got them to try to track down what went wrong. Never took less than 45 minutes.

Re:
the PING command from a command prompt lets you specify packet size, with the default being 32 bytes.
So all you do once you know the IP of the machine you want to ping flood (which was easy in our case, because they left an unsecured terminal displaying the call queues where anyone could get to it- just no one else had the chutzpah to muck with it) is write a batch file (which, if you're smart, you'll store somewhere where it's not traceable to you!) containing a for/next loop to repeat the ping command how ever many times.

isn't it just possible that everyone is happy with their earthlink service today?
